Get Excited And Make Things, UK Sign Remixed For Make Generation

(via LaughingSquid) "Inspired by a WWII era poster currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity in the United Kingdom, Matt Jones produced the image above, whose timely call to action - “Get Excited and Make Things” - is perfect for the growing DIY and Maker movement. (I especially like the crown of spanners. In fact, in the spirit of the poster, I think I’ll weld myself one out of actual spanners.)"

The museum guard at the Menil in Houston feeds the squirrels peanuts all the time so they're super tame. I made friends with this one and we ate some french fries together.

"1. Go to Wikipedia and hit “random” and the first article you get is the name of your band.

2. Go to “Random Quotations”. The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page will be the title of your new album.

3. Go to Flickr and click on “Explore the Last Seven Days”. The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover."

South By South Flesh - Review

this was a kickass mini-fest; we had a great time. pix and video coming soon. we tweeted the show too.

kudos to John and the Parade of Flesh crew, and to all the bands for dragging their hangovers up from Austin to put on a great show.

Howl brought the rock. They were so loud and, to quote the singer, it was "kinda early for this...shit." The Fresh and Onlys were great, although they were obviously the worse for last night's wear. Too bad the sound guy screwed the sound up. The Sleepy Sun was by far my favorite and one of the bands folks were especially excited to see. Interesting sound and some really nice kids from San Francisco. Pterodactyl was upstairs and although I could get up to see them, what I heard from the downstairs stage was some very cool, loud-as-hell instrumental rock. I wasn't in to The Coathangers, but they had the crowd bouncing with them. Abe Vigoda was a big hit, glad we saw them. We left early, but the crowd was already getting up for The Ohsees. I'm sure they were great.

The Obits @ Lola's Sunday March 22

These guys will be at Lola's in Ft. Worth on Sunday with Bear Hands and The Moaners so, if you don't make it to SXSFlesh you have another option.

South By South Flesh

we already have our tickets. come check out Parade of Flesh's fest this Sunday. it's gonna be...fleshy.

Sunday - March 22

Young Widows, Thee Oh See, Wavves, Abe Vigoda, more
Of all the SXSW spill-over shows, South By South Flesh has the most ambitious lineup of the week. It will feature a staggered lineup, with 14 bands alternating 20- to 30-minute sets upstairs and downstairs. beginning with Juarez (Tucson) upstairs at 3:30 p.m. Really, there's not a bad band in the bunch. Headliner Young Widows (Louisville, Kentucky) falls somewhere between hardcore and metal with some brains to back up the brawn. The band specializes in short, punchy headbangers with an emphasis on rhythm, and is frequently compared to Shellac and Jesus Lizard, which makes sense. But their great song "Mirrorfucker," with its noisy slide riff, reminds me more of a heavier Polvo. Another highlight will be Thee Oh Sees (San Francisco). From what I've read, the band started out as a folk band, but must have evolved considerably to produce its current psychedelic garage rock, with thumping drums, tambourine, layered overdriven guitars and echoing vocals. For those asking the question at the heart of Surfer, Dude--"Where's the Wavves?"--Nathan Williams' one-man San Diego band will be upstairs at 9:30 p.m. He'll bring a drummer along to help bash out his insanely catchy, fuzzy, poppy tunes. Jagjaguwar band Women (Calgary) will bring its jangly, melodic and occasionally noisy rock to the main stage at 8 p.m. Fortunately, the bar can supply the wine to go with your Women and song. Be there by 6:30 p.m. to catch Abe Vigoda (Los Angeles), who craft Afro-pop-influenced punk songs with complicated yet catchy melodies and hints of noise; the likeminded but inferior Vampire Weekend should have retired in shame after touring with the band. But, speaking of vampires, Wavves tourmates Vampire Hands (Minneapolis) will offer a swirling, textured, bass-heavy rock set at 5:30 p.m.

an intimate evening with The Giraffes

just you and the whole internet. awww....so special

(from The Giraffes)
"Hola, hombres y hermosas.

You know, every time we Giraffes announce we're going on tour (which we are, in April), people always write us, all like, "come to my town, A-Holes!", even though their town is, like, 3,000 miles away, and only accessible through a winding series of snowy mountain passes, with burros carrying our amplifiers and a wizened sherpa cryptically warning us to turn back. Yes, we're talking about Ohio.

Anyway, here's a live FREE show *everybody* can enjoy: you can see

The Giraffes, Friday night, March 13, at 11.30 pm,
perform a full set of new hits and old favorites LIVE at SpinTheBottle.com.

A quick word about Spin the Bottle: it is a long time web broadcast network, helmed by Tad Low, the mastermind of both Pop-Up Video and Pants-Off Dance-Off. He accosted Carson Dailey (remember him?) live at the TV Guide awards (remember them? No, of course you don't. No one does). He has hosted some of NYC's most debauched fondue parties, and, for you local residents, if you look for the banner on West 29th St., then cross the road, looking to the third story window and you'll see a roughly six-foot tall painting of Mr. Low himself, naked with a full erection. Absolutely true.

Anyway, he's just turned his office into a live performance studio with lots of fancy new equipment, and what better band to "break in" the new digs than the Giraffes, no? Keep in mind, you won't need a password / account / your girlfriend's credit card when she's not looking. Just go to SpinTheBottle.com and enjoy the Giraffes Concert Experience (TM) live on your sperm-encrusted laptop or dad's home computer. For added realism – verisimilitude, if you will – throw beer, raw chuck or pie filling at your roommate or your cat.

The show will also be archived for your pleasure, in case you are out seeing
some half-assed buzz band that night, or catching up on your Tivoed CSI: Miami. SpinTheBottle.com for The Giraffes and other eye-catching programming.

In summation:

The Giraffes LIVE

11.30pm Friday, March 13th

at SpinTheBottle.com

with the pleasing folk-sounds of Bucky Hayes at 10.30

Google Docs "Power User" Appointed First US Gov CIO - ReadWriteWeb: "Vivek Kundra, long expected to be appointed the first ever CTO of the US Federal Governement, will instead be appointed as the country's first Chief Information Officer (CIO), according to reporting done by the Washington Post's Kim Hart.

Kundra became 'web 2.0 famous' last Fall when as D.C. CTO he switched 38,000 District of Colombia government employees off of Microsoft Office and onto Google apps instead. What kinds of crazy moves could he make as the government's CIO? We can only imagine."

"For a certain kind of geek, there's no more important film than Disney's 1982 cult hit "Tron." The story about a man trapped inside a computer who must continually fight for his life by riding light-bikes across a digital playground didn't do so well at the box office but gained a massive following in the years since. Plaintiffs' attorneys have filed a second class action alleging illegal spying of Internet users to create tailored advertisements. On March 2, a class action suit was announced against behavioral advertising vendor Adzilla Inc. and a host of Internet service providers, alleging that they secretly tracked Internet users' surfing activity, in violation of their privacy and data security rights.
