Language: Adopt a Word to Save it From Extinction

for the love of icasm and kalotypography, save the words!

(via Lifehacker)
Language: Adopt a Word to Save it From Extinction: "Save the Words is a website dedicated to keeping underused English language words in the dictionary. Pick an underused word and pledge to save it from extinction.

Lexicographers analyze the frequency of word usage in popular culture and media to decide which new words will go into the dictionary, but they also track the falling popularity of words and opt to remove them. At Save the Words, an initiative of the Oxford English Dictionary, you can browse a wall of rare words, be given a random word, or search for a word to see if it's in danger of extinction. Once you find a word to your liking, you can pledge to use that word in common usage as often as you can:

'I hereby promise to use this word, in conversation and correspondence, as frequently as possible to the best of my ability.'

Thanks to Save the Words I finally have a proper adjective for a co-worker I had named Shrub Head: frutescent. Need to find companion words for your new vocabulary buddy? Check out our compendium of the best online language tools for word nerds."

Secret Suppers Come To Dallas

(via SideDish)
"The “secret supper” isn’t a new concept, but until today, I’d never heard of one in Dallas. I’m sure some of you have, you know all about them, and I’m a total idiot. However, if you’re unfamiliar, read this article. The basic idea is, food loving people get together at someones house for dinners made with (many times) local ingredients, as a restaurant alternative. The cost is often low. Sometimes everyone cooks, sometimes one chef is in charge. I don’t think this is technically legal, hence the secret aspect. Which of course makes it more exciting and fun.

If you’d like to know about an upcoming secret supper in Dallas, please continue reading. If you don’t care to know more, please don’t jump.

I just got off the phone with Jordan (feel like I shouldn’t include last name), the man in charge of next week’s Food Creates Community dinner in Richardson. This is the group’s second dinner. Jordan went to El Centro and he also runs a small catering biz. He’s not at all concerned with getting the word out about these dinners, so here’s the skinny: He wants to promote local foods and get similar-minded people together, so he’s started hosting these dinners. Next week’s will be for 30 folks, at his house. It will be Italian themed and focused on locally-sourced food. Italian wines will be served. He will be doing the cooking with the help of two or three people. There will be a cocktail hour (blood orange martinis), followed by salad or soup, a house-made pasta course, a fish with risotto, and gelato for dessert (probably limoncello flavored, made by his friend).

Cost: $30. To RSVP, go here. You can also see pics from the dinner last fall."

The Anti-Restaurants - NYTimes.com

The Anti-Restaurants - NYTimes.com: "He compared the experience to shopping at an indie record store instead of a big box retailer and said he appreciated the small scale, market-driven menu and informality. “I want a dog walking around while I eat,” he said after Ms. Newberry’s mutt was loosed. “I want the fan to tip over. I don’t want that sterile white tablecloth. That’s why I’m not in a restaurant.”"

PULL OVER THE INTERNET: SPRING BLOCK PARTY LINEUP WILL MAKE YOU CRAP YOUR PANTS | THE SKYLINE NETWORK: "HOLY CALAMITY! BEATS OF INSANITY! ARE YOU READY FOR THIS! Like adding a mustache to your dasheeki, the folks over at the Free Press have taken the delicious pizza that is their twice annual Westheimer Block Party and have sprinkled a metric ton of fresh grated awesome on top. Stoked. And things are a brewin, here’s a quote from organizer (and Free Press editor) Mr. Omar: We hope to snowball the block party into a legitimate arts and music festival and marquee event for the city. Ambitious? Yes. Risky? Yes? But we have an undying faith in this city, our community, and the potential for big, wonderful things to happen."

The Rayographs - Band To Watch - Stereogum

The Rayographs - Band To Watch - Stereogum: "The Rayographs are a UK trio. At first listen they're reminiscent of Grace Slick working with the Breeders, but they tap into a dark psychedelia that's quite different than the sounds created by the sisters Deal. A closer approximation would be a piano-free White Magic. It's lame to affix a bunch of female comparisons to an all-female band, but the comparisons fit (as does a mention of Patti Smith, sorry). To move beyond that, though, and deeper into the Rayographs themselves, the band's made up of guitarist/vocalist Astrud Steehouder, bassist/vocalist Jessamine Tierney, and drummer/sometime vocalist Amy Hurst. The three create a dark, intense, rollicking sound, but the real hook is Steehouder's voice. It's where the Grace Slick comparison comes into play. Check out her repetitions of 'everyone needs a heroine' in 'Green"

a short film recreating all three original Star Wars films, as narrated by someone who saw "bits of it" but never watched the whole film.

to my husband's shame, my own recounting of this story would probably be this bad, or worse. funny!

What to Do With Leftover Champagne - Well Blog - NYTimes.com

What to Do With Leftover Champagne - Well Blog - NYTimes.com: "What to Do With Leftover Champagne

No matter how much you imbibe on New Year’s Eve, chances are you’ll have some already-opened bubbly still left over on the morning after.

While mimosas, bellinis and other champagne cocktails are always an option on New Year’s Day, a healthier option is to use the uncorked bubbly in creative home cooking. Champagne is an excellent accompaniment to seafood and salads, and several Web sites offer recipes for starting the new year in a healthy way."

Modern Hobo Code: "Modern Hobo Code

The legendary 'hobo code'was a set of covert markings used to warn other hobos about danger or to clue them into good situations. As times have changed, a new set of code symbols have emerged to alert other hobos to circumstances in modern America. Perhaps you have seen them on your own city streets."
