Universal/TuneCore deal opens major doors for indie artists

"Indie artists who distribute through TuneCore can now purchase major label services from Universal on a flat-fee basis. Artists retain their rights and royalties while still benefiting from those Universal services they need, such as access to world-class recording studios and live performance help."

Discovery ~ Orange Shirt

You have probably been listening to that Osaka Loop Line single for months huh? Good thing the whole album came out today.

Dead Mellotron ~ Nothing I Ever Imagined

I can't stop listening to Dead Mellotron's album Ghost Light Concentration. I can only find it on their Myspace page though. They are from Monroe, Louisiana. Other than that details are sketchy at best. They may even be defunct at this point, which would be sad. If I hear from them I'll post a link on where you can get a copy.

Follow up: Looks like the whole album is free. Get it here. By the way they are alive and well. They also want to come to Dallas. More coming...

Cool Infographics: Illinois: Visualizing Music

Cool Infographics: Illinois: Visualizing Music: "Jax de Leon just graduated from the graphic design program at SUNY Purchase College School of Art and Design, and was kind enough to share some of her senior project work called Illinois: Visualizing Music. Jax focused on one music album (illinois, by Sufjan Stevens), and visually analyzed different aspects.

This project is an experiment in taking an audio recording of music that is beautiful and personally meaningful to many listeners, deconstructing it from different vantage points, rearranging it, and building it up again into visual interpretations. This project visualizes lyrics, instrumentation, notes, patterns, and word usage. Hopefully these interpretations will provide another way of experiencing this album, although no amount of analysis can adequately represent the visceral response one gets when presented with a compelling piece of music.

Above is one of the word usage circles, and below are a visual of the instruments used in the album and a visual of lyric content. Check out all of her different visualizations and photos from her final exhibition here."

"The Army's Band of the Coldstream Guards have done their own tribute to the late Michael Jackson, as they played one of his most famous hits Thriller near Buckingham Palace. Around 40 drummers, trumpeters, clarinet and trombone players took part." (via The Sun)

candyworks

Video: 'Fireworks' by PES | Serious Eats
"This fireworks display from stop-motion animation artist PES features Peeps, candy corn, Good & Plenty, and more. If only real fireworks caused candy to fall out of the sky. Watch the video after the jump."

our buddies, the Cut*Off's, new video = awesome

Dallas - DC9 At Night - Video: The Cut*Off's "When You're Dead": "Fort Worth's Pixies acolytes, The Cut*Off have a new video promoting the first single from their upcoming disc--and, it's a whole lot more on the alt-country side than the Pixies side of things. And that's perfectly OK, 'cause the song, especially when set to the above Schoolhouse Rock-appropriated clip, makes for a pretty good, sorta creepy, noir-ish time. Check it out."

5 Audio Atrocities to Throw Down a Sonic Black Hole | Underwire | Wired.com

5 Audio Atrocities to Throw Down a Sonic Black Hole | Underwire | Wired.com: "Scientists at the Israel Institute of Technology in search of the elusive Hawking radiation recently created a black hole using Bose-Einstein condensates. While their creation wasn’t powerful enough to keep light from escaping, it had little problem sucking in sound for good.

Speaking of sucking sound, the experiment gave us a musical idea: If you could throw any album into a sonic black hole, what would it be?"

interesting album production process, by Fishboy for new album "Nom"

Dallas - DC9 At Night - Fishboy Preps New Release, Nom, Which, Actually, Kinda Is and Kinda Isn't A Fishboy Release At All?: "The plan for the band's upcoming EP, Nom...The concept's pretty cool: (front man) Michener recorded all nine of the disc's tracks fairly basically--just tracking his vocals and some acoustic guitar strums--and passed the disc along to The On Nom Noms (Denton producers Howard Draper and Mark Sonnabaum) to fill in the rest, completely devoid of his own input. The results? Some pretty great stuff, including the tracks 'Larger Than Before' and 'Tired Tired,' which find Michener's nasally voice coupled with ambient pianos, cymbals and some faint choir singing--basically a far cry from (and fittingly, larger than) any previous Fishboy tracks. Another standout? The song 'Accidents,' which is more driving than most Fishboy tracks normally dare try to be."
